 Critical Reflection

SHOW exhibition

Introduction

The work in the third unit is an extension of the work in the second unit. The second unit is an art installation. Then I added a new set of works to support the exhibition in the summer to make it more complete. As for the research festival, I chose to do a workshop that brought together the art that I could work with a plan.

Planning

When I was assigned to organize an exhibition during the summer, I planned the following work by bringing the work into the second unit to build on. I have experimented with liquid emulsion to install the work. I created a three-dimensional room to install my work in room C131. to simulate the work. The various preparations will be discussed in the next thing to do.

Learning the process of the technique

Near the end of the second unit, I have been experimenting with images on marble. The technique is called liquid emulsion by expert Hayde. She brought the book "Silver Gelatin" which mentions this technical process. I have tried it, and the value ISO of liquid emulsion and iso value of paper is not equal, which is lower than one time of paper. Therefore, it will take additional time to shine. I learned from doing the liquid emulsion technique that number one is a new technique.

I have experimented with it until I know the process. It can also apply to other materials such as wood, cement, etc. The second one is the liquid emulsion technique. Liquid emulsion can dodge and burn but cannot multigrade filters. In this meaning, it cannot create contrast because this solution does not have multigrade. Third, the coating process for printing the solution onto the stone is to polish the stone's surface to allow the solution to work. It was attached to the stone. After that, you need to coat. Make it smooth and thin, so you can't paint it. Make it thick because if it's too thick, it will make the image not sharp. The last thing I learned was the process of preserving the work. After it is printed onto the stone, the image will turn yellow because sometimes it must be applied with a fixer. For longer to prevent yellowing. However, the fixer can only be used briefly because the fixer Images are sometimes etched, so calculations must be made to soak them in the solution.

Therefore, learning the liquid emulsion process can further expand my work in the future because this is what I have been looking for a very long time from this technical learning.

3D installation planning

After I knew the room's location where I would show my work, I created a design. Plan for installation work: I got room C131. Since the room was large, I had to share it with another person. So, I made a drawing in Google Sketch and drew it in the form of a room. As shown in the picture below Moreover, I have used sound. In installing the work, I used a total of 5 speakers in the performance of this work as well.

Preparing my artwork

I will say it in parts. I was starting with stones, coffins, Buddha statues, and sounds.

Stonework

When I got the marble from a source near Sid Motion Gallery, I brought it to the university to have it cleaned and then went to the wood workshop to polish the surface to make it rough on the marble. I will not use a substance coated side with a substance that makes the stone shiny. After polishing is finished, rinse with water and hang to dry. Afterwards, prepare to go into the dark room to coat it with liquid emulsion to make it smooth, then turn it to dry for 45 minutes, then shine light onto the stone.

Coffin

It is a work in unit two. I planned a life-sized coffin. I studied and found a style for making coffins. The tricky thing in making wood this time is To cut according to the level of the wood on this side. I had to cut this angle and then use a woodcutter by writing in Adobe Illustrates to cut the wood to the size we wanted. Until I could make a coffin, the installation work was the same as in the second unit. But in this exhibition, I got the viewer to be able to enter the coffin. Pillows and blankets were placed inside. The coffin lid can be opened and closed.

Buddha statue

During my bachelor's degree, I took a course in 3D sculpture. I learned the basics of 3D spinning. So, I had the opportunity to practice sculpting until my final work was a Buddha statue. While printing on a 3D printer is something that has a high price. But when I could print it, I tried printing it to install it in this exhibition.

Sound

The Dhamma practice inspires my sound art. Through meditation, I will use sound to guide me in practising Dhamma. And while practising meditation, I often hear the sounds of nature. So, I consulted with someone who has expertise in sound management. I sent natural sounds and applied them to this performance. Moreover, I use my voice to lead the Dhamma practice. It took about a month to work until it was completed.

Installation of works

The installation of the work involved how to install the marble on the wall. The marble is very heavy and may cause danger, so we consulted a steel expert. At first, the steel had to be bent to install, but there were still safety problems. So, I went to consult a tutor. He advised me to use the L Hoop. I tried B + Q to find a Hoop like that and found it. Then they tried installing the work on the wall in room C134, but they were probably worried because it was a wooden wall, so they tried installing one of the works. It turned out that it could be installed and was very strong.

Before installing the work, my friends have to manage the space in the room, for example. Walls with pictures must fill the holes with white paint and the floor with filler paint. Moreover, I had to manage the room that the bachelor kept as a storage room. It took almost a week to organize the space. As shown, after completion, it is time to install the work. I will start by placing the coffin inside the room, followed by placing the Buddha image in the mirror on the left side of the room. After that, the fan was installed using black plumbing pipe storage, which is more convenient than using nails. Next will be marble by the previous one. I have experimented with installing works using L Hoop.

Organizing the room neatly

Moreover, The hoop is solid enough to install marble. As for the sound, I installed five speakers at each corner. The important thing was to store the cables. At first, I only thought about how to marble the cables once I did. My classmate had been holding the wires with plastic cable organizers like nails, so I asked where my friend had bought them and arranged them to look orderly. Still, I had to build a concealed box for the audio player because I couldn't connect the speakers with a Raspberry pie (tiny computer). So, I solved my problem by opening my computer to loop the sound in that room. So, I had to build a box to hide the mixer for the sound. In this installation, some issues had to be fixed on-site, and there was some outside intelligence, but overall, it still went according to my planned plan.

Showing work

On the opening day, people were interested in my work. The reason is that one of my rooms has a sound before entering the room, and when arriving, you will find a large coffin facing the audience. The audience didn't rush to see what it was and observed the surroundings. I planned the audience's walk about the room's space. However, it's up to the audience. As for the sound, it has the effect of causing the audience to come and see the work, with the sound playing continuously. Then, some viewers wanted to go down into the coffin to see what it would feel like if they died. How will they think? Because a living person can't try entering a coffin to experience life. And on the opening day, a curator was interested in my work and brought his business card to give me his work. This exhibition is an opportunity to open up the experience of showing work where outsiders come to see the work, have various opinions, and meet new people this time.

Criticism

In the exhibition of this work, there are people who both admire the work and criticize it. For example, one viewer did not like that I brought a coffin for other viewers to take photos because the viewer's father had passed away, and the coffin was used in the ceremony. Therefore, the promise of the work's coffin to the viewer is to disrespect the deceased. On the other hand, some viewers like my work. Marble work Many people wonder what technique is used to make photographs adhere to marble or like a coloured talipot fan with exciting patterns and words synonymous with the marble's context or a coffin where viewers can experience entering the coffin, etc.

My classmate tried to sleep in coffin

After the exhibition, the artist planned to destroy and record the work as a video. I initially planned to cremate the coffin, which is common in Indian culture, but England's fire regulations and logistical issues made it difficult. Instead, I destroyed the coffin by entering it and having a friend put the lid on it.  Then I walked in and out, destroying the coffin again and having another piece of work.

Titled: Interference

Year: 2023

Medium: Video performance

Duration: 59 seconds.

Strength

There are three advantages to this third unit.

I had experience using the liquid emulsion technique because it was a technique I had been searching for on the internet for a long time, and then I had the opportunity to try it out and make this set of works.

Being delicate, I usually am not a neat person when it comes to work, but in making the coffin, I had the opportunity to cut the wood to a straight angle. But I missed just a little. Still, I was able to do it to my satisfaction.

Installing the work in a hurry made me learn things such as how to organize the work, how to hang the work, the distance of the work, and whether the space of the room and the artwork are appropriate.

Weakness

In this exhibition, I still had a glitch: sometimes, I needed more time to plan everything carefully, which resulted in having to fix problems on-site all the time, such as dealing with wires, initially with tape. The black colour tape is finished, but if I use black, it will attract the eye too much because I have to push the work to be as plain as possible. Or I was covering the mixer in the speakers because, at first, I had the idea to protect it. However, I have a problem that I can't use ras berry pie due to technical problems. I consulted with the technician but couldn't do it, so I had to use the computer to play the sound. If I can exhibit again, I will plan more carefully. I should look more broadly or at the big picture. I should have more of a backup plan.

Critical about media

In the display of work in the Barge house, a friend in fine art said why? I, who studied MA fine art photography, came to work in installation art. Choosing media to work does not always have to be done with the same medium. Because sometimes the medium I use may need to be in contact with the work I want to communicate. I will mention an artist like Damien Hirst, who, when he was working on ready-made works, has already caught the eye and has many outstanding works. But at present, he has been working on the art of painting, in the same way as showing work in the summer Show that I still use the form of installing the work, making it evident. The context in which I wanted the effect of bringing the viewer into the art space I created was to make the viewer aware of my work slowly and carefully.

In conclusion, my communication can extend beyond techniques. Anyone can use any technique because today's world can use the same techniques. But the important thing is the content and concept the artist wants to present through artwork.

Reflection Content

In the content section

This work will say that Death and Buddhism talk about the truth of life that makes us aware of death because everyone in this world has one destination: death. But in today's world, many passions make us not fully understand the truth. My work, therefore, wants people to be aware that death is inevitable in Western or Eastern cultures. I analyze each work and explain various things.

I am starting with four pieces of Talipot fan.

The Four Talipot fans it is essential to funeral ceremonies in my country. The four talipot fans are because the monks will chant mantras while chanting mantras. The monks will place the talipot fan before them and perform the funeral prayer. In detail, the life cycle will be written: birth, old age, sickness, and death, which people should be very aware of.

When funeral prayers are held, there must be a coffin for prayers. But the coffin in my country's style is a smooth rectangular box, which sometimes causes Westerners to misunderstand it. Therefore, I make a Western-style coffin so that viewers of any race will understand this symbol: coffin or death itself.

Another thing that is as important as the palm is that The four pieces of Marble were created by me and on the Marble. I mentioned two things, and one is the image. The four statues are a child statue, an old statue, a damaged statue, and an angel statue. These statues represent the dead while they are alive. But still, if you look deeper, they died anyway, no matter what the age range. This situation is called the cycle of life. The other thing is materials. I have visited cemeteries or churches that have coffins or graves. Most often, they use Marble, which is expensive to make. These things are consistent in the context of my work, and Marble has meaning and culture and is used in such a way as to provide refinement and beauty. So these two things were why I took the Marble and printed it on the stone.

And the last thing is the Buddha statue. In the history of that religion, Buddhism initially used symbols of various things to represent it, such as the lotus flower, the Dharmachakra wheel, the Bodhi tree, etc. But cultures influence each other. Greece influenced India. The Greeks created images of respect for gods. It affected the culture of India, the country where Buddhism was born. My Buddha statues are simple and modern. In various ceremonies, Buddha images will be used in the ceremony.

Workshop

Introduction

Today's world has a lot of chaos in life, such as studying, working, and living. Sometimes, we suffer a lot, so we should find peace. But what do we do when we still have to live our lives? Therefore, I plan to organize a workshop on Dhamma practice where I will teach basic principles and then put them into practice. Art media will be used to conduct this training.

Plan

I will give a lecture about

Satipatthana 4 is the principle of meditation according to the Mahasatipatthana Sutta. It is a practice for enlightenment. That is, understanding the truth of all things without being influenced by defilements. There are four types of mindfulness: following Anupasana in the body, feelings, mind, and dhamma. Mindfulness.

By the word sati, it means remembering, not forgetting. Mindfulness is an attitude that occurs only with a sound mind. It doesn't happen with evil. It helps the rational mind think only about beneficial things that result in happiness. Remember only things that do not cause harm, namely defilements. As for paṭṭhāna, it can be translated in many ways. But in Mahasatipatthana Sutta and Satipatthana Sutta, it means determination, firmness, and determination not to let time go to waste.

It means knowing and seeing things as they are, the Paticcasamuppada cycle. To see the three characteristics or common characteristics Until the attachment to the power of all heresies is released.

After the introductory lecture, I will let everyone start practising by using the sounds I made in the workshop. The participants will try practising Dhamma, where they can explore their minds as a meditation practice. After that, when I enter the training, I will also have prints of the work I have made for the workshop participants.

In summary

Those who participate will learn to practice Dhamma. Practising meditation can have an effect in different areas of your life and help you have a better quality of life. However, Dharma practice is a personal matter, and Dharma practice should be seen as a link to the development of individual values and character.
